Rider Equipment

Alt-Berg Original Hogg Lite boots were one of the real success stories of my rides to India and Egypt. Designed as a dual purpose bike and walking boot, they are ideal for touring. The beauty of these boots is that they are made to measure, giving a supremely comfortable fit. Even after 27,000 tough miles, mine look and feel like new.

I thought the ride to Egypt would be baking hot and dry all the way... thank heavens I packed a
Jofama Wet Stop Rain Suit just in case. I comfortably rode through snow, hailstorms and torrential rain in it! The suit has zippers that come up to the knee for ease of getting on and the main zip runs diagonally across the chest. Essential for crossing the Himalayas.

I wanted riding pants that breathed well in hot climates, had knee, thigh and hip protection and would dry quickly if riding through rain in climates too hot to wear waterproofs. I settled on Motoport's made-to-measure Police Air Mesh Kevlar pants. The Air Mesh kevlar at the front is wonderfully breathable and 10 times stronger than leather. The stretch kevlar at the back is supremely comfortable. They have a 7 year guarantee and I'm thrilled with them.

Lewis Leathers have a proud heritage of making leather clothing for aviators and motorcyclists and their quality is just as legendary as their styling. I have always owned thick, chunky biking gloves, which would be far too hot for this journey. The Lewis gloves are unlined and made from the softest hide imaginable. A surprise bonus is an increased sense of feel and control of the handlebars.

I only have enough room in my luggage for one change of clothes. Rohan travel clothes are inimitably suitable. They are extremely rugged yet very packable and easy to care for. They also look smart however tough the conditions. I'm also wearing an All Terrain Money Belt that from the outside looks just like an ordinary belt to hold your trousers up. Probably the most well used and appreciated piece of kit when riding in hot climates. I use a 3 litre Camelbak hydration pack which fits sugly on my back and also has space in its pockets for a few other small essentials and a snack.

I wear
Icebreaker pure New Zealand Merino wool clothes just about every day year round. Icebreaker are especially good for motorcycling. The beauty of Merino wool is that it's super warm when layered yet remarkably cool in hot climates. It naturally breathes and resists body odours; you can wear it day after day in tough outdoor conditions without getting whiffy!
